A contribution of $60 can deliver a hysterectomy procedure for a woman in Bihar, $15 for a sterilization, $30 for a normal delivery, or $25 for an appendectomy

Thank you for your interest in supporting Janani’s work in Bihar.

India is unquestionably an emerging global power in many areas. Unfortunately, although hundreds of millions of India's people are benefiting from the nation's rapid development, one of the country's largest states, Bihar, is being left behind.

Bihar has a long and rich cultural heritage, but per India Today's “India's Best and Worst States” August 15, 2005 special issue:
• Of the country's 20 big states, Bihar is the worst to live in.
• The state scores lowest in primary education
• Bihar finishes last in primary health.

Janani (www.janani.org) is a non-profit Indian society that has been working in Bihar since 1996 to address the family planning needs of its people. It is an affiliate of a global non-governmental organization, DKT International (www.dktinternational.org), which is based in Washington, DC, and has offices in 11 countries worldwide.

Janani's mandate is to provide affordable and high quality health and family planning products and services to the most underserved people in Bihar. Janani's program reaches people through 30,000 retail outlets that sell subsidized condoms and oral contraceptives; 38,500 village centers that sell contraceptives, provide rapid tests and counseling; and 73 medical clinics that provide a range of clinical procedures.

The Janani program has had impressive results over its nine-year history. It currently accounts for 21% of family planning in Bihar. Although Janani's work has had some impact in Bihar, there is still an extraordinary amount of unmet need, particularly among the poorest members of society who cannot even afford Janani's low cost products and services.

Janani’s program is an internationally recognized innovative healthcare service delivery model that has been extensively studied by UC-Berkeley and the University of North Carolina in addition to a number of Indian organizations. We work closely with leading organizations and are currently collaborating with Harvard University to improve our communication campaigns.

Your valuable contribution will enable us to help the people of Bihar.

We will send you an e-mail acknowledgement when we receive your donation, and we will notify you when and for what purpose your gift was used. Unless you allocate your payment for a specific procedure, we will use it to extend the reach of our networks, to set up more medical facilities, and to deliver free products and services to the poorest segments.

Thank you in advance for your assistance in making a difference in Bihar.

Sincerely,
Gopi Gopalakrishnan
Programme Director
