The Janani programme is entering an exciting phase now. The rural networks are rapidly expanding, and quality of care aspects are being integrated strongly into the clinical networks. Once this is accomplished, Janani will be one of the largest private service delivery networks in the social sector

anywhere in the world.

The core lesson from the Janani experience so far is frighteningly simple: that the challenge of the population programme is not that clients, even those poorest and unlettered clients, are uninterested in planning their families. “ With its single-minded focus on delivering products to rural communities, and utilizing private sector clinical expertise to supplement the public sector’s delivery of clinical services, Janani’s programme can take credit for exploring many creative new service delivery techniques.

Equally impressive is the cost at which the programme has delivered the services. Janani, despite working in one of the poorest parts of the world and working predominantly in rural areas, has been among the most cost efficient of DKT International’s programmes worldwide. Use of franchising strategies and collection of membership fees are only two of the reasons why this has been possible.

In the years ahead, we hope to see even stronger integration of clinical services in Janani’s programming. India has largely depended on the public sector for clinical family planning services but in states where Janani works, the public sector needs strong supplementation. Given the track record so far, we are sure that the Janani team will achieve it quickly.”
